Polystore Databases to be Examined at IEEE, CIDR Conferences

Polystores, a more-modern approach to sharing heterogeneous data that addresses Big Data’s volume, variety and velocity demands, will be the topic of discussion at two upcoming conferences:

ISTC principal investigators, researchers and students will be participating in both conferences, as organizers/moderators and presenters.

IEEE Workshop on Methods to Manage Heterogeneous Big Data and Polystore Databases

The IEEE workshop was organized by ISTC principal investigators /researchers and Sterling Foster of the US Department of Defense, to encourage international dialog about the state of polystore research. The program will feature keynotes by Dr. Luna Dong, Google and Dr. Fatma Ozcan, IBM, and papers and presentations by researchers from around the world.

“From the number of great paper submissions we received for the first IEEE workshop on polystores, it’s clear that there’s growing interest in bridging the gap between heterogeneous data stores,” said Vijay Gadepally of MIT CSAIL, one of the organizers.  “We’ve got a roster of world-class speakers who’ll be sharing their insights.”

ISTC co-founder Michael Stonebraker of MIT CSAIL, Intel principal investigator Tim Mattson, and Dr. Gadepally will offer opening and closing remarks, and moderate the program.  Dr. Mattson and ISTC principal investigator David Maier of Portland State University will also run a closing discussion, “What Are Polystores and Multistores?”

CIDR 2017

CIDR, the leading conference on innovative advanced systems research, has a track on polystores led by ISTC PI Jennie Duggan of Northwestern University.

CIDR was founded in 2003 by noted computer scientists Michael Stonebraker, David J. DeWitt and the late Jim Gray, to showcase and publish very-leading-edge research.

The ISTC for Big Data has played a pioneering role in modern polystores, beginning with Mike Stonebraker’s seminal article on the topic, “The Case for Polystores,” in July 2015.

A multi-institution team of researchers is developing a new big data polystore reference architecture (BigDAWG), which is designed to work on complex, real-world problems that naturally span different processing or storage engines. BigDAWG provides an architecture that supports diverse database systems working with different data models, addresses the competing notions of location transparency and semantic completeness via “islands of information,” and uses middleware to provide a uniform multi-island interface for analytics.
